[ARCHIVED] Water Conservation Tips

Town of Narragansett
Water Conservation Tips
SUMMER 2022

The Town of Narragansett continues to encourage responsible water use and promote conservation, and offers the following tips and information:

When washing dishes by hand, use wash and rinse basins rather than running water.  Soak pots and pans before washing.  Use minimal dish soap so less rinsing is required.

If an automatic dishwasher is used, no need to wash or rinse dishes before loading into dishwasher, just scrape off food scraps and let dishwasher do the washing.  Run dishwasher only when           full and select washing cycles that use the least number of washes and rinses.

When preparing food, thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator and wash fruits and vegetables in a basin of water, instead of running the faucet.

Compost food scraps or throw out in garbage, use garbage disposal sparingly.

Keep bottles of water in the refrigerator for drinking instead of running the tap for several minutes.

Try a faucet aerator on sinks to reduce water use while maintaining flow.  Turn water off while shaving and brushing teeth.

Keep showers short and use a low-flow showerhead.  Use a flow restrictor to maintain the faucet setting.

When washing clothes, try to do full loads only and always match your washing machine’s water level to the load size.

When outdoor water use is not restricted, water lawns and shrubs during the morning or evening to avoid excess evaporation.  Use mulch around plants to save moisture.  Letting the grass              grow higher in dry weather will keep the soil moister and save extra watering.

Water vegetables directly by hand with watering can instead of sprinklers.

With swimming pools, watch the water level to avoid unnecessary spillage and be sure to use a cover to prevent excess evaporation when the pool is not in use.

Use a broom or leaf blower instead of the hose to remove debris from driveways, sidewalks and walkways.

Avoid letting the water run while washing cars.  A shut-off nozzle on the hose is a must.

Flush the toilet only when necessary.  If the toilet is not a low-flow model, install water-saving displacement devices in the tank to reduce the amount of water needed to flush.

Don’t let leaks go unattended.  A faucet that drips can waste over 3,000 gallons of water a year.  Use dye tablets from time to time to check for toilet leaks.  Keep an eye on sprinklers to make             sure they are working properly and not leaking.

Use water-saving devices whenever possible.  Use retro-fit aerators, flow regulators, and displacement devices to make your home one that helps everyone use water wisely.  They are easy to         hook up and use.

Conservation kits are available for free for Town of Narragansett customers - call 782-0639 for information or stop by Town Hall.
