[ARCHIVED] Narragansett to Participate in Communications Exercise Sunday

Before, during and after disasters like hurricanes, Narragansett public officials will need to communicate with neighboring communities and the State Emergency Management Agency, to coordinate the potential rescue of victims or provision of resources to help recover from the disaster. On Sunday (9/18) the Emergency Management Agency of Narragansett (NEMA) will activate its emergency operations center (EOC) and test these communications systems.

According to NEMA Director and Fire Chief Scott Partington, the ability to setup an EOC provides coordination and support to all town departments that are involved in the prevention, protection, response, recovery and mitigation of disasters. Each town can open these EOC's and communicate with each other via web based systems, or land mobile radio systems.

The exercise on Sunday will simulate that a disaster has occurred and require that participating EOC's communicate with each other via different voice communications. As the "incident" progresses, different types of voice communications systems will be removed, simulating failures. The objective of the exercise is to be able to communicate with as many systems as possible and never lose total communications.

Narragansett will participate with other communities such as Portsmouth, Westerly, Charlestown, West Warwick, Coventry, The American Red Cross and others.

The Portsmouth Emergency Management Agency is coordinating the exercise.
