[ARCHIVED] 125th Anniversary Celebrations

The Narragansett 125th Anniversary Committee is happy to announce that there are two events at the Towers on Sunday, October 6th. The first event from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm is the performance of the major scene and of the soliloquy from the opera "William Sprague and his Women." The cast features: the renown Rene de la Garza as Governor Sprague; the rising opera soprano Kate Norigian as Kate Chase Sprague; and the noted tenor Mark Conley as the narrator and Willy Sprague. The talented Brian Cardany is the Orchestra Conductor.

The opera was performed last at URI on September 30, 2012 to rave reviews. Since Governor William Sprague was the first President of the Narragansett District (later Town) Council in 1988, this Opera is quite significant for our celebration.

The opera was composed by Geoffrey Gibbs, Emeritus Professor of Music Composition at URI. The opera is based on the play of the same title by Richard Vangermeersch and was first performed at the Maury Loontjens Library in November of 2011. There are a limited number of tickets. There is a $10 admission charge, which will benefit The Friends of the Towers. Please call Richard Vangermeersch at 401-783-8853 or the Towers at 401-782-2597 for tickets.

It is possible that Vangermeersch's book "50 Vignettes on William Sprague (1830-1915)" will be available that day. This book will be published by the South County Museum.

The second event will occur that evening at The Towers from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm. This will feature the noted band "Eight to the Bar." Songs from each decade of Narragansett will be performed, including our own "Narragansett Pier." Some may choose to dress in clothes of their favorite decade. Prizes will be awarded.

Our own John Miller, whose father was the owner of The New Casino (1905-1956), will be arranging an exhibit of items from his vast collection. He also will give each attendee an actual ticket from a huge roll of admission tickets from The New Casino.

Tickets are limited. Kate Vivian of The Towers is handling these tickets. There is a $15 admission charge, which will benefit The Friends of The Towers. Please call Kate at 401-782-2597 or email

Hope to see you there.
