The RI Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has temporarily lowered the weight limit for the Great Island Bridge, connecting Galilee to Great Great Island in Narragansett, to three (3) tons, effective Friday, April 26, 2013. The bridge will have one-lane of alternating traffic to further protect its structural integrity until repairs can be made. Only passenger vehicles will be permitted to cross the bridge however, emergency vehicles (ambulance, fire trucks, etc) are allowed to cross.
It is anticipated that repairs will be completed within a week, allowing the weight limit to be raised to approximately ten (10) tons, pending further evaluation of the bridge. The Great Island Bridge is scheduled to be replaced in 2014.
