Be a Force of Nature: Severe Weather affects everyone, Know Your Risk, Take Action, Be an Example
This year, the week of April 22 will mark the first National Severe Weather Preparedness Week.
The goal of National Severe Weather Preparedness Week is to inform the public about the severe weather hazards and provide knowledge which can be used to take action. These actions can be used to save lives anywhere - at home, in schools, and in the workplace before tornadoes and severe thunderstorms strike.
Because severe weather knows no boundaries and affects every individual we’re calling on people across the country to be a force of nature in their communities to prepare for severe weather.
TAKE ACTION:
Narragansett EMA, FEMA and NOAA are just one part of the emergency management team that works to prepare and respond to disaster. A key member of the team is YOU!! That is why we are encouraging everyone to do their party and prepare now, so that you know what to do when severe weather strikes.
Make a plan - It is important to plan in advance of an emergency. How you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations.
Build a kit - A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for 72 hours.
Get involved - Many community members ask "How can I help?" Major disasters can overwhelm first responders, empowering individuals to lend support. Narragansett volunteers help with Shelters, Points of Distribution, and MEDS distribution among other actives and help is always needed. All Narragansett volunteers come from our support agency, Southern RI Volunteers.
